Unequalled gueridon in palisander on red pine with gold varnishing depicting scrolling foliage, vases, leaves, palmettes and swans. Fluted giltwood pedestal over acanthus leaves ending in a stylized palm-shaped head under the table-top. Weimar Central Germany, circa 1835/40. 27 1/2" h, 31" diameter. Reference: 2 servers with corresponding gold varnishing decorations from Weimar for the Weimar residence of Grand Duke Carl August of Saxonia-Weimar (probably following a drawing by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who founded 1776 the drawing school in Weimar) have been sold at the ARS ANTIQUE FAIR 1992 in Frankfurt and were illustrated at A 31 in the catalog. |
