Uniquely designed Russian neo-classical pier-mirror. Veneered with one of the most outstanding and exciting woods: Karelian birch on pine. Stepped frame with ebonized corner-plates and inlaid hairlines. Top with 3 ebonized radial grill-works following the umbrella motif. Original mounts with garlands, feathers, torches, laurel leaves and rosettes. Baltic (Russia), before 1825. 58 1/2" h, 30" w, 1 1/2" d Reference: Karelian birch veneers with their specific grain configuration are extremely rare and show similarities only with Carpathian elm or Bird's-eye maple.
